Preparing, Trimming & Submitting Images

Please understand that all photographs supplied to us will be trimmed or parts of the image will be lost due to normal production processes. The following are guides for you to use so that you receive exactly what you expect when your albums is made

Panorama Photographs (all albums) & Magazine Album Pages

TRIM BUFFER

It is very important that you do not place important subject matter like people, key lines or type near the edges of your images. Allow at least 10 mm buffer from all edges of your images for Magazine and Panorama photographs

Do not place key lines near the edge of the images that you supply us. These prove to be too difficult to keep square or aligned when placed in facing pages
.

Expect to loose @3-5mm of each edge of your photographs to trimming so do not put important information close to the edges of the print. Only the spine edge (or gutter edge) is not get trimmed.

Please help us to minimise errors by ...

  • Including trim marks in all four corners of the digital file that you send to the lab or you can mark the corners of prints with China Graph pencils just outside the image area you require. A clear marking on the prints supplied by you or the lab will ensure that there is no confusion on print borders or boundaries.

  • If you are unable to include crop marks, you can put a 1-3 pixel key-line of any colour around the outside edges of your page design. Any line on the edge will be completely trimmed off as it is impossible to include them when the album is trimmed for binding.

Please keep the following in mind when designing images for Panorama pages or Magazine Pages.

Photo Covers

Images supplied to Albums Australia for the purpose of being used as a Photo cover must be on Kodak or other professional paper. Other types of paper (ie., inkjet paper) is not suitable for the production process of this feature.

Photo covers can be made to any width you choose to suit the cropping of your photography. We will adjust the cover material to suit the image that you provide. The height of the image must be exactly as specified. Be advised that you will loose 25mm from the top, right and bottom edges of your image when it is made into a Photo cover.

TRIM BUFFER
You also need to remember to allow an additional 10mm of trim buffer on those same edges when placing key lines, type or important  image information in your image area.

PLEASE NOTE:
INKJET & METALLIC PAPER DISCLAIMER

We are seeing a definite increase in the use of both inkjet and metallic photographic papers used (and provided to us) for inclusion within our custom made wedding albums.

We acknowledge that these mediums have a lot to offer the professional photographic studio, hence their increase in popularity, but they also bring a much higher degree of difficulty in terms of working with them in the assembly of wedding albums. By its very nature, mounting images within an album requires skill and comes with a high degree of risk regarding damage during their handling.

The simple fact of the matter is that Inkjet prints, sprayed prints and Metallic photographs are extremely fragile to work with. They kink & scratch very easily and are impossible to retouch or clean. Because of this, there is a much higher chance of damage during production. Some of our competitors have flatly refused to work with these materials. We haven’t gone that far yet but we simply can not be responsible for the cost of reprints or freight cost when damage occurs with these particular materials.

Rest assured that Albums Australia takes tremendous care with all materials provided to us. We have been customising albums by mounting photographic prints for over 15 years and have many procedures in place to minimise damage. We will continue to do all we can to improve these procedures and minimise problems. Please be aware that you agree to be responsible for the cost of replacing damaged images if you decide to use these types of materials.

TDA will make a print file exactly as you see it on the cover designer

Submitting Digital Image Files

To avoid the possibility of print damage during shipping, you can send your image files via CD/DVD or via online internet transfer to recommended Australian Professional Digital Labs. We have made special arrangements with specific labs to ensure that we get the best possible printing quality to ensure your albums are perfect, the first time!

Acrylic Photo Covers

Metallic or high gloss paper is highly recommended for this service due to their smooth surfaces and great finish (see disclaimer above). A textured surface creates undesirable patterns beneath the Acrylic. The print that you supply must not be sprayed, overlayed or treated in any way before submitting them to us.

Acrylic Cover photographs loose 50mm of image area on the left hand side of the print . Please check the specification sheet when preparing your images for submission to us.

Metal Photos

Metal Photo images need to be supplied to Albums Australia as a digital Tiff files at 300 dpi Greyscale. Your images must be supplied ready cropped and to the specific size needed for the album format chosen.  Files must definitely be spotted and cleaned before submitting to us as redo metal covers are extremely expensive!

Please note that the material these images are reproduced on is of a light grey finish, so keep this in mind when choosing the right image.

Keyhole Panels

When ordering a Keyhole panel, you need to supply us with the underlying image to ensure that the hole is centred precisely over the image that you want seen.

You will need to provide to us a copy (fax/jpeg/proof/ photocopy) of the image that is to be under the keyhole, cropped to how you want to be used so that we can clearly see the area to be visible through the keyhole.

Tips For Packing Prints

Packing your images for shipping to us is vitally important. The only packing that we have found to be just about indestructible is a plastic (pvc resin) plumbing pipe with caps on both ends.

If you choose to send your prints directly to us, please follow these simple steps to minimise or eliminate potential damage caused in transit by.

  • Place your output sheets or photographs into a plastic bag.

  • Pull all edges of the bag taught and tape closed so that the prints inside are unable to move within the bag

  • Insert this into a cardboard tube (minimum 5mm thick) or plumber tube (available for purchase at Albums Australia).

  • Tape the bag of photos to the inside of the tube to prevent it from sliding back and forth

  • Pack both ends of the tube with soft packing (crumpled newspaper or bubble wrap will do). This will also prevent the prints from sliding back and forth within the tube.

  • Use only very thick tubes.  Resin plumbers tubes are great; you can fit a screw-on end on one side.  A tube placed within another tube is also a good solution. Albums Australia can supply these tubes to you and return them to you with your album delivery.

  • Tubes to be returned to studio must be clearly labelled; having a number of tubes in the studio will allow you to rotate them with various jobs going through at any one time.

"Plumbers" pvc tube - recommended for print transport.
